Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most prevalent bacterial infections, affecting nearly 150 million people, every year, globally. Although women are more susceptible to developing a UTI, owing to the characteristic anatomy of the female urinary tract and its proximity with the reproductive organs, infants, young boys, and adult men are affected too. The frequent complications of UTI in both men and women include recurrence, pyelonephritis with sepsis, and renal abscess. Young children may suffer renal damage from UTI. The emerging multi-drug resistance in the uropathogenic bacteria is a major challenge in treating UTI.
