Threatened abortion is associated with uterine cramping and/or bleeding while the cervix is closed. The WHO estimated that globally around 15% of all clinically recognizable pregnancies are spontaneous/threatened abortion, whilst 50%-60% are due to chromosomal abnormalities.
The maternal factors that may be responsible for threatened abortion include both local and systemic conditions like genital tract abnormalities, infections, maternal disease states, endocrine factors, and other miscellaneous causes.
