Incidence of hospital deaths are not common, but the occurrence of infectious disease-causing death of a doctor in the hospital environment puts the overall healthcare management into a questionable state. The AIIMS, Delhi has to pay 50 lakh compensation to the family of an aspiring doctor who died of dengue while studying at AIIMS. The 20-year old student was a second rank holder in AIIMS exam and was in the seventh semester when he expired in the institute’s ICU department.

The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission found this incident as a ‘casual’ act in the part of AIIMS management by taking things so lightly as the life of the patient had no value.
