Diagnostic endoscopic procedures came into vogue following the invention of rigid & flexible fibre-optic endoscopes. Rigid fiber-optic laryngoscopes, naso-endoscopes & oto-endoscopes are available for examination of larynx & hypopharynx, nose & nasopharynx and the ear (mesotympanum, epitympanum & hypotympanum). Flexible laryngoscopy is done in patients having significant trismus (inability to open mouth). Flexible laryngoscopes are introduced through the nose.

Rigid fibre-optic endoscopes have a very good resolution so give very good picture quality. Flexible laryngoscopes have a poor resolution so the picture quality is not so good.
