Opioids are commonly prescribed for pain. However, opioids come with a plethora of adverse effect along with risk of overdose and chance of drug abuse. Therefore, a concrete guideline should be generated to regulate the opioid prescription in clinical setting.

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, USA (CDC) has formulated a guideline using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework, and recommendations are made on the basis of a systematic review of the scientific evidence while considering benefits and harms, values and preferences, and resource allocation. Opioids are prescribed widely in clinical setting starting from primary care and extending to chronic pain outside of active cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care.
