The incidences of obesity have been steadily escalating since 1980. Obesity is not only associated with a higher risk of mortality but also with chances of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, sleep apnoea, several kinds of cancer, and osteoarthritis. However, the problem of obesity can be overcome by surgeries, known as bariatric surgeries,ย  involving changes in the digestive system to lose fat and weight. In some cases, patients undergoing this operation lose an average of 60โ€“75% of their excess body weight and maintain this weight loss (>50%) for more than 15 years.
