Childhood obesity is a known risk factor for obesity in adulthood and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). As bariatric surgery becomes more common in adults, pediatricians and other health care providers should be made familiar with adolescent bariatric surgery. This article reviews the indication for surgery, candidate selection, bariatric surgery options required for better outcomes. Developing nations like India have a unique problem of dealing with 'double burden', wherein at one end of the spectrum, we have obesity in children and adolescents while at the other end we have malnutrition and underweight.
