Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the utmost common cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease. Approximately, 33.2% of patients with T2DM developing CKD over a 4-year follow-up. Additionally, the prevalence of CKD in diabetic patients rises with other cardiovascular (CV) risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and heart failure. 1 Thus, there is an urgent need for more effective antihyperglycemic agents for the management of cardio-renal risk in T2DM.
