Until 1977 the focus was majorly on family planning, but later, child health was also addressed by the policymakers. Consequently, the Family Planning Program was converted into Family Welfare Program with Maternal and Child Health as an integral part of it.
The underlying vision for the development of this program was that a reduction in birth rate has a direct relationship with a reduction in infant and child mortality.
