Doctors at one of the leading pediatric hospitals in Chennai have successfully performed a complex open chest surgery on a 10-year-old boy, removing a rare 900-gram mediastinal germ cell tumor that had occupied more than 75% of his chest cavity. The life-saving procedure was carried out after the child presented with recurrent respiratory infections, and it marked a significant achievement in the treatment of rare pediatric chest tumors. The boy was admitted to one of the Hospitals in Chennai after repeated episodes of respiratory illness raised concerns.

An ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy revealed a centrally located mediastinal germ cell tumor, which had remained undetected for a prolonged period.
