63-year-old woman presents for evaluation of a chronic cough, productive of very thick, yellow sputum that sometimes becomes blood-tinged. She has experienced recurrent episodes of fever associated with pleuritic chest pain. Over the last 5 years, she has developed shortness of breath with exertion.
A CT scan was performed and it revealed that she had bronchiectasis. A recent result for sputum culture sent by the GP showed the presence of pseudomonas, although sensitivities are not known. What should be the treatment plan?
