A retrospective observational cohort study published in the International Journal of Cardiology evaluated 102 adults with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) who underwent prophylactic cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation during routine cardiac surveillance in western Sweden between January 2000 and March 2023. Electrocardiography (ECG) identified pacing indications in 53 patients, primarily PR interval and QRS duration prolongation, corresponding to Class IIb recommendations. In contrast, Holter monitoring identified pacing indications in 49 patients, frequently detecting intermittent second-degree atrioventricular block, a Class I indication that was not identified on screening ECG.
