There are 1.5 million blind children in the world and one million of them live in Asia. The prevalence of childhood cataract has been reported as 1 to 15 cases in 10,000 children in the developing countries. It is estimated that globally, there are 200,000 children blind from bilateral cataract. Cataract surgery in young children poses different challenges and potential complications compared to those encountered in adult populations.
