A Chandigarh-based woman has been awarded compensation by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission after a gallbladder surgery at a private hospital turned into a prolonged medical ordeal. The patient first consulted the hospital in 2021 for abdominal pain. Upon diagnosis of gallbladder stones, she was advised to undergo an immediate laparoscopic cholecystectomy. After obtaining informed consent from the patient and her family, the surgery was performed, which included the insertion of a pancreatic stent.

However, during the operation, the stent reportedly broke from the outside, with a portion becoming lodged in the pancreatic duct.
