In a recent ruling, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu State Government to pay Rs. 7.5 lakh as compensation to a family whose newborn daughter's thumb was accidentally severed by a staff nurse at Government Raja Mirasdar Medical College Hospital in Thanjavur. The Court recognized the injury as a result of medical negligence and issued the order in response to a petition filed by the child's father. The incident occurred in May 2021, when the petitioner’s wife delivered a baby girl at the government hospital.
Following the birth, both mother and child were admitted for postnatal care.
