According to a study from University College London, UK, COVID-19 infection can cause sudden permanent hearing loss. Scientists state that it is extremely important to address this side effect which can be reversed by proper steroid treatment. A case report of a 45-year-old man was published in the British Medical Journal who was tested positive for COVID-19. He was treated with remdesivir, intravenous steroids, and a blood transfusion which made him better. However, the patient started experiencing tinnitus (ringing in the ears) followed by sudden hearing loss in one of his ears.
While the exact cause of the condition is yet unclear, scientists speculate it may be due to the viral infection.
