Dry eye disease (DED) is a common complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In addition, dry eye syndrome (DES) is frequently observed in the diabetic population. A 54% prevalence of symptomatic and asymptomatic DES has been indicated in diabetes. 1 Timely ocular examinations, follow-ups, and drugs can be used to manage DES in people with diabetes. Artificial tears are the most commonly used DES treatment strategies. This Specialty Spotlight highlights the association of DED with diabetes, including its etiology, prevalence, clinical characteristics, and management of DED in diabetes.
