Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with risks to the woman and to the developing fetus. Miscarriage, pre-eclampsia and congenital malformations in the fetus are more common in women with pre-existing diabetes. Evidence suggests that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects between 2% and 5% of pregnant women all around the globe. Although insulin treatment forms the mainstay of the treatment, management of GDM also involves medical nutrition therapy.
