About 15% of diabetics will develop a foot ulcer at some point in their lives, owing to peripheral arterial disease and/or sensory neuropathy. Amputation is the most serious risk for these patients and about 25-50% of diabetic patients have their limbs amputated due to infection at the time of their first appointment. Medical advances have given us a better understanding of diabetic foot pathophysiology in recent years, and diabetic foot surgery is now considered one of the most important aspects of foot treatment.
