Doctors in Pune have raised concerns about the rising number of patients experiencing back pain due to commuting on pothole-filled and uneven roads. After heavy rains, many roads in the city become hazardous with large potholes, causing injury to travelers. A spine surgeon highlighted the mechanical stress these roads place on motorcyclists' spines. He noted that many individuals who travel 50 to 60 km daily for work have sought treatment for neck or back pain .
His team has treated cases such as slipped discs in young adults and osteoporotic spine fractures in older people, both triggered by the jolts caused by hitting potholes. Another doctor echoed these concerns, pointing out that the prevalence of pothole-riddled roads leads to chronic injuries.
