Is it permissible for General Surgeons with good experience and exposure of diagnostic gastrointestinal endoscopy to take up therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy also? Or is there a law which clearly states that the advanced therapeutic procedures are only and should be under the domain of medical gastroenterologists only. It is commonly seen that surgeons have good amount of dexterity which is a prerequisite for successful endoscopies.
They may also acquire the knowledge of the diseases and procedures that are involved. Again there is a shortage of competent medical gastroenterologists especially at district level.
