Type 2 diabetes posses multiple underlying pathophysiologic defects, and sometimes monotherapy alone cannot maintain glycemic control. A combination of anti-diabetic agents having complementary mechanisms that can address multiple pathophysiologic pathways is recommended. The combination therapy should be well tolerated without increased risk of hypoglycemia and cardiovascular events. Additionally, it should provide patient conveniences, such as single-pill and fixed-dose. The combination of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors meet these criteria.
