For patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), each 1% rise in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is positively correlated with a 38% increased risk of macrovascular complications. Hence, control of blood glucose is a fundamental approach in the management of T2DM. The fixed-dose empagliflozin/linagliptin with complementary glucose-lowering action is considered as a promising treatment option for patients with inadequate glycemic control on metformin. Besides, this combination therapy modestly reduces body weight and blood pressure without significant safety issues.
