The USFDA has recently approved a new drug for the treatment of Cushing’s syndrome in adult patients who cannot undergo surgery or have disease progression in-spite of surgery. The USFDA has mentioned it as the first drug that directly targets the cortisol overproduction by blocking the 11-beta- hydroxylase enzyme thus preventing the cortisol synthesis. Cushing’s syndrome is a clinical manifestation of the pituitary tumor that results in the over secretion of adrenocorticotropin which results in overproduction of cortisol. Cushing’s syndrome is associated with certain health issues such as high blood pressure, obesity, type-2 diabetes, bone loss, fractures, and blood clot formation in legs and lungs.
The approval was based on the results of clinical trials carried out on 137 adult patients suffering from the disease. The details of the study are given in the following table. Title To…
