The scientists claimed to have detected anticancer properties in three traditional varieties of rice grains such as Gathwan, Maharaji and Laicha found in Chhattisgarh. A Research was conducted by the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Mumbai. The scientists initially tested four varieties of rice taken from the rice germplasm bank preserved in IGKV and discovered anticancer properties in three of them i.e. Gathwan, Maharaji and Laicha.
The head of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at IGKV stated that the extract from these three varieties of rice were tested on the cancer cells, which resulted in the death of cancerous cells without affecting the normal cells.
