Medicine is an art and science. Every medicine has a generic name. The generic prescribing allows for any suitable drug rather than a particular brand of drug to be dispensed. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has directed all the registered medical practitioners to prescribe drugs with generic names as far as possible. But still, most doctors prescribe brand name because they feel that that the brand-name works better.
Also, they believe that the drugs they are prescribing are better. However, it is also sometimes patients who are brand specific and think that the more expensive the drug is the most effective it is as compared with their cheaper versions. What could be the possible reasons that doctors are prescribing brand names instead of generic names? Do you prescribe brand name over the generic name which might be a less expensive option?
