Rapid lifestyle changes have increased obesity prevalence in low- and middle-income countries faster in the last few years. A report published in the Lancet has analyzed worldwide trends in obesity and underweight from 1990 to 2022 based on 3,663 studies involving 222 million participants from 200 countries and territories. According to the report, the obesity prevalence has more than quadrupled since 1990, with 1,038 million obese individuals estimated worldwide in 2022. While the obesity rate was nearly tripled in men and doubled in women, the obesity prevalence was higher among adult women than men in 2022 (504 million vs.
374 million). Furthermore, obesity among children and adolescents increased by five-fold in 2022 (159 million). Countries in Polynesia, Micronesia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa reported the highest rate of obesity prevalence in the world.โฆ
