The World Health Organization (WHO) recently updated its HIV testing guidelines to advocate expanded use of self-testing with rapid home diagnostic tests as an effort to improve HIV testing uptake. This recommendation is supported by trials that found higher rates of HIV testing with self-testing compared with facility-based testing among couples and individuals at high risk for infection (eg. men who have sex with men and partners of HIV-infected individuals). Self-testers with a reactive test should undergo confirmatory testing by a trained provider. Source: World Health Organization.
