Amidst the arrest of Sangli-based doctor for aborting about 19 fetuses , Indian Medical association (IMA) is in talks with Union health ministry’s Central Supervisory Board (CSB) to a legislate on graded punishments for Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) violation. Due to the protest in the recent past from the medical fraternity against actions taken by the health authorities, the union health ministry has approved in principle to amend PCPNDT rules.

Though the ministry is scheduled to make changes in the PCPNDT rules, a committee under the health ministry had also been constituted to recommend separate provisions for record- keeping and actual sex selection under the Act.
