There is an exponential increase in the incidence of diabetes in the Indian subcontinent. Over the last couple of decades, the impact of diabetes as well as oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) on bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures has been reported in few studies. Moreover, non-communicable diseases like osteoporosis are more likely to be seen in these age groups in association with chronic diseases like diabetes. Both subjects with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of sustaining fractures when compared to normal individuals.

Bone quality rather than BMD is the key factor affected in patients with type 2 diabetes. Many interactions between bone and glucose metabolism have been reported which incorporate the role of osteocalcin, and insulin growth factors. Considering the above, what precautions and prescriptions would you suggest to avoid further complication?
