Caloric restriction which is referred to dietary restriction with adequate intake of essential nutrients and vitamin increase the longetivity in animals with short life span. It is hypothesized that caloric restriction reduces body fat, blood glucose, insulin, metabolism and free radical damage which links the slow aging to caloric restriction. Although research has linked CR to increase life span, there can be adverse effect related to CR such as hypotension, slower wound healing, depression, loss of libido, menstrual irregularities, and infertility.
Preliminary research is inconclusive; therefore relationship between long term CR and longetivity should be scientifically evaluated in well designed clinical trial.
