Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the fatal and neurodegenerative disorder of motor neurons which largely affects the motor nerve cells present in the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. At present, no promising treatment is available that halts or reverses ALS except drug like riluzole. This article provides an insight about stem cells based therapy in ALS. ALS is the complex neurogenerative disorder, which is characterized by the loss of motor neurons that leads to muscular weakness with atrophy, loss of reflexes and eventually results in paralysis and death.

After diagnosis, the ALS patients survive for a period of 3 to 5 years. However, the majority of ALS cases detected are sporadic and 5-10% cases are of familial ALS.
