I am shocked to see that more than 85% of doctors practising even in major metro cities have little or no knowledge of the importance of genetic screening in cancer patients and their families. Most Oncologists are ignoring the genetic component completely in their practice. Even when someone has family history of breast cancer some doctors do not order (or ignorant) the NCI recommended screening for BRCA1 and 2 mutations.
There is a minority who will consider genetic testing for their patients - but the only test they are interested is to order EGFR, KRAS, BRAF and related mutations for considering targeted therapy. I know a particular case where such targeted therapy was given to the patient without even doing a genetic test to confirm the feasibility of that approach. The other end of the spectrum is that these folks just don't care about genetics and consider it as a waste of time…
