The year 2021 earmarks the first liver & kidney transplant through cadaver donation at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Mumbai witnessed its first dual organ transplant (liver and kidney) of the year 2021 at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. This is also the first combined liver-kidney transplant since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the first dual organ transplant performed at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. This was possible because relatives of a 45-year-old brain dead businessman consented to organ donation. The donor lost his life due to a catastrophic stroke.
Once it was confirmed he is brain dead, the possibility of organ donation was discussed with his wife and mother by intensivists and social workers.
