Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally. In addition, HCC and chronic liver diseases are closely related, which makes it important to consider tumor-related and liver-function factors for treatment. HCC can mostly be managed non-surgically by locoregional treatment with transarterial chemoembolization or ablation, while resection may be needed for intermediate disease. However, surgical management can be restrictive unless it is the last option available.
