Fosfomycin, although being an older antibiotic, has recently gained new interest in the treatment of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Its unique mechanism of action, broad spectrum of bactericidal activity, safety profile, and tolerable adverse effects makes it a favorable treatment option. Although fosfomycin is mainly used for urinary infections, it has demonstrated synergistic effects in combination with other antibiotics for severe MDR gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections. Clinical evidence is also available for the efficacy of fosfomycin combination therapy.
