Optimum maternal nutrition is essential during pregnancy to significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy complications and to support and enhance maternal metabolism. According to the recent UNICEF survey, a third of women of reproductive age in India are undernourished, with an average body mass index (BMI) of < 18.5 kg/m 2 . It is evident that an inadequate nutrition of the mother before conception and in the first trimester inevitably gives birth to an undernourished baby.
Several research findings report that appropriate micronutrient supplementation reduces the incidence of low birth weight, intrauterine growth defects, and other birth defects. This survey intends to get insights into the current trend of maternal nutrition in India and its effect on mother and child health.
