The Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Madurai recently ordered two doctors from a private hospital to pay Rs 25 lakh in compensation to a woman after a mop pad was negligently left inside her lower abdomen during surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. The commission also noted that the doctors removed the patient's right ovary without obtaining valid consent and failed to inform her about this during follow-up visits. The case dates back to 2016 when the complainant consulted an Ob-Gyn and was diagnosed with a chocolate cyst in her right ovary.
Despite undergoing surgery on the same day, the patient's pain persisted, leading to further scans that eventually revealed a foreign object and the removal of her right ovary. The complainant sought treatment at another hospital, where a CT scan confirmed the presence of a foreign body and the absence of her right ovary.…
