Melanoma is the malignant transformation of melanocytes, which originate from the neural crest. Although melanomas usually occur on the skin, they can arise in multiple locations where neural crest cells migrate, for example, the gastrointestinal tract and brain.

5% to 10% of patients suffer from melanomas due to hereditary causes.
