Direct fluorescent antibody test (DFA) is used for diagnosis of rabies largely but PCR assay could be a better option than DFA test due to increased accuracy and efficiency according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Rabies diagnosis has become an easy prospect by PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) assay.

The assay is based on amplification of selected sections of DNA and RNA for analysis which requires lesser time. PCR assay could improve rapid diagnosis of rabies and limit unnecessary use of post exposure prophylaxis in humans exposed to potential rabid animals.
