A premier eye hospital in Hyderabad, India, has reported a ten-fold increase in the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the last decade. The report also highlights that less than 30% of doctors are aware of ROP . Study details Medical records data from January 2000 to December 2017 were evaluated. The number of babies evaluated for ROP: 87 in the year 2007, and 1727 in the year 2017 The number of babies requiring ROP treatment: 38 in the year 2000, and 489 in the year 2017 Retinopathy of Prematurity ROP is one of the four avoidable conditions known to cause blindness in children; the others include Vitamin A deficiency, congenital cataract , and congenital glaucoma .
