The USFDA has made two important revisions to the emergency use authorization (EUA) of the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (Moderna) against COVID-19. The revisions are as follows – The number of maximum extractable doses from a single vial of the vaccine is 11. Generally, around 10-11 doses can be extracted per vial. An additional multidose vial containing 13-15 doses will be made available by the manufacturer. The revisions have been made to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines and an increase in the number of doses, thus enabling rapid immunization.

The USFDA has also re-emphasized that the vaccine lacks preservatives, therefore, any remaining dose should be discarded. Also, doses from different vials cannot be pooled to prepare a full dose because of the risk of contamination.
