S ulfonamides are the second most cause of the allergic reactions due to drugs and after the beta-lactam antibiotics. However, their allergic reactions significantly differ from the beta-lactams. This article focuses on the most prevalent types of the sulfonamide allergic reactions in non-HIV patients and their evaluation. Sulfonamide drugs are also referred as ‘Sulfa drug'.
They are classified as antimicrobial sulfonamide and nonantimicrobial sulfonamides which include diuretics, hypoglycemics, anti-inflammatories, and antihypertensive agents. The other classes related to sulfonamides contains protease inhibitors which are used in the HIV treatment and the sulfones. The HIV infections have changed the epidemiology of sulfonamide reactions drastically as they are more susceptible to sulfonamide reactions.
