According to a study by researchers at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, some trauma patients are up to 58 times more likely to die than others, irrespective of the extent of injuries. More than 9500 patients were evaluated under the study using a tool called Intermountain Risk Score. A team of researchers developed this computerised tool that combines factors of age, gender, complete blood count and basic metabolic profile. It has been previously used to assess the patients with heart failures or chronic pulmonary disease.
In this study, the tool was first time tested for trauma patients admitted due to an accident or injury. It was observed that the data from Intermountain Risk Score provides doctors with important information such as irregular blood cell distribution, to be considered while deciding the prognosis of patients.
