Couple of days back, our college had hosted a blood bank, couple of kilometres away from pimpri, pune. The department had asked me to be at the camp, as a medical officer. Things were moving smoothly, wen all of a sudden , a volunteer fainted after donating his blood. This is quite common in such settings and generally resolves on elevating the patient's legs. Unfortunately , in this case, on doing the same, the patient cud not be brought back to his senses.
The pulse was falling, 40 per min, irregular, not following any definite rhythm. His respiration was feeble, with decreased rate.He was not responding to noxious stimuli. I eventually had to give chest compression and mouth to mouth ventilation , to bring him back to his senses. I realised that emergency medicine is such a discipline , that everyone should know a bit of, because it is of immense value.
