1.The Varicella Zoster Virus(VZV) is the etiologic agent of two diseases-Varicella(Chicken pox) and Zoster(shingles). 2.Varicella is a disease manifested by pruritic rash accompanied by fever. and mild to moderate signs and symptoms  and is often a self limited infection of the childhood.

3.Zoster is a disease of adults with a prior episode of chicken pox  which on occasion may be subclinical or following varicella  vaccination. 4.During primary infection, VZV establishes  a latent infection in sensory and cranial neurons; zoster results when the latent virus reactivates and returns from the neurons to infect the skin 5.Reactivating factors for the VZV includes: setting of relative immunologic compromise particularly Cell Mediated Immunity(CMI);following diseases or various treatments such as steroids, cancer, chemotherapy, transplantation and irradiation.
