A team of doctors at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, recently saved the life of a baby born at 26 weeks of gestation. The Emirati baby underwent surgery five days post-birth. The baby weighed 600 grams during birth and was struggling with an intestinal problem . Five days post-birth, the baby was observed to vomit a green substance . An X-ray examination led to the diagnosis of a r uptured large intestine due to stool accumulation and blockage .

In a prompt intervention, the doctors performed an emergency endoscopic surgery to clean the contents of the stomach. The surgery was initiated by making three holes, not exceeding 3 mm in the baby’s abdomen. Thereafter, the abdomen was cleaned, and later, the holes were stitched back. It was a challenging surgery and required utmost diligence and extra care as some of the organs of the baby had still not developed completely.…
