Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic drug that has been useful for prevention and treatment of bleeding in various clinical settings, such as surgery and trauma. Recently this drug has been shown to have benefit in the management of post partum hemorrhage.
The World Maternal Antifibrinolytic Trial (WOMAN) found that tranexamic acid reduced death due to bleeding in women with post-partum hemorrhage by 20 to 30 percent , and was not associated with an increase in adverse effects.This pragmatic, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 193 hospitals in 21 countries and evaluated the effect of early administration of tranexamic acid (1 g by intravenous injection) on mortality, hysterectomy, and other morbidities in over 20,000 women with clinically diagnosed PPH.
