A stem cell bank at the Dubai Health Care City has recently launched a 'Cord Blood/Stem Cell Storage Programme’ in which the cord blood can be stored free of cost for up to 5 years. Earlier, the storage of cord blood used to cost above Dh15,000 for 25-30 years; however, under this program, it will be free of cost for up to 5 years. The program is for families whose children are diagnosed with serious medical conditions such as leukemia, metabolic disorders, sickle cell anemia, DiGeorge syndrome, Krabbe disease, cerebral palsy and autism that requires stem cell transplant as a treatment.
Nearly 200 children will be enrolled during the first year of the program and are open to all expats and underprivileged families with children diagnosed with the above specified medical conditions.
