The US FDA has approved a riboflavin 5’-phosphate ophthalmic solution for use in epithelium-on corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with keratoconus aged 13 years and older. This innovative formulation is bioactivated by UV light in an oxygen-enriched environment to strengthen corneal tissue. Unlike traditional procedures, it does not require epithelial removal, offering a non-incisional, pain-free alternative that helps reduce discomfort and speeds up recovery time.
